I have a running list of goals to get done "this year" (a moving target of a year but I've kept myself pretty honest). One of my goals is to shop local and eat in season. Another is to get naked yoga pics taken of myself, and yet another to max out my company's 401k match.
Yesterday I decided to enact the shop local goal and bought all of my produce from Stillman's Farm at their Copley Square stand. For only $24 I bought:
- 3 ears of corn
- 2 cucumbers
- 2 summer squash
- 1 lebanese squash
- 1 eggplant
- (note how many phallic items are on this list...)
- 1 green, 1 yellow, 2 small red peppers
- 4 anaheim peppers
- 1 yellow cauliflower
- 1 bunch bibb lettuce
Then completed my protein shopping at Trader Joe's for an <$50 week's worth of groceries (my goal is $35-40 so may need to fine tune a bit, but as is I may not even be able to finish all these veggies!).
So basically the net-net of this wonderful experience is non-waxy vegetables, shopping local and seasonally, money saved, healthier food purchased, new recipes to try. As if you needed another reason local harvest lists all of the farmer's markets and farms in your area out for you.
